Maria Hoyos has more than 20 years of experience teaching cello to students of all ages both throughout California and overseas. Currently, she teaches in the Folsom, Napa, and Sacramento areas. Maria earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in cello performance and currently plays as principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony in Sacramento. Additionally, she plays as the associate principal cellist for Folsom Lake Symphony.
Maria’s professional performing career began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra, also playing as a soloist in 1992 and as first cello from 1998-2002. During her time in Colombia Maria also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.
In 2000, Maria came to the United States to perform with the Texas Christian university Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas. The next year she played with the Eafit Symphony Orchestra in her hometown of Medellin.
Starting in 2003, Maria settled in Sacramento, California to earn her Master’s degree while performing throughout the year at California State University Sacramento Symphony. Additional performances have included the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and other chamber groups.
